Hawkwing Pendant
Michele Black and Terrance Deemer challenge the conventions of fine jewelry. The newest work is inspired by the textures and images of the West.
Materials
Recycled precious metals and vintage stones are featured in the new etched series: not so much re-purposed as reborn. Melting something with a torch is incredible fun.
The Process
"Handmade" means we use traditional methods to alloy, pull wire, cast, carve, and fabricate the work here in our studio. Although our early backgrounds are very different - Terrance's in engineering, and Michele's in art - we have both had extensive training and experience in bauble-smithing. Ours is a true collaboration; each is a designer and maker. Our new fascination involves transferring images to metal, and etching, to produce a three dimensional version of that image. Sources include 17th century woodcuts, old lithos and whatever sparks our imagination.
The Jewelry
The culmination of all these elements is jewelry that is at once elegant, sculptural, and very wearable. Versatility is key. A piece may have multiple possibilities as a brooch/pendant, be reversible, or have removable components. Two of our clasp designs are on record at the Library of Congress, and are copyrighted.
For us, the journey is no less than the destination. Artistic growth means change, so the work evolves. Come and see...
