Greetings from the Big Potato,
Boise, Idaho, that is. Swimming pools, movie stars.
We've moved the studio for the last time... Now we have a large production workshop and a space for teaching and a bench just for prototypes. And no stairs! Photos coming soon.
Winter is the season for new work to be born. On the bench now is a series of hawk-wing pendants, each a variation on a theme. Etched with 19th century images of a gyrfalcon's feather pattern, on one side, and a botanical on the other, they are reversible. The variation comes in with the hanging "stamen" element, which can incorporate diamonds, river gold, endless possibilities. I find that working within the framework of a series is the most satisfying way to explore ideas. There's just enough structure to keep creativity from stalling.
Conquering the etching process has been a challenge, as there's a dearth of information on the topic, and so few people practice it. It's speculated that Native Americans etched shells with a resist and a mild acid, as far back as 1000 years ago.
Our new favorite method involves transferring images, with the end result being a three dimensional representation in metal. Vintage lithographs provide a universe of material. This winter's newest work will be micro collages of 19th century illustrations, juxtaposed with the modern. Themes will continue to focus on the issues, animals and landscapes of the West.
All in all, we were very lucky to have had a successful year. A big thank you to all our loyal clients and to all the lovely people encountered in our travels. If you have our card, or just run across this site and have a question, please call. We're friendly.
